This is a common question we’re asked by dentists: I need to wear sports mouthguard multiple times a week, will this affect my clear aligner treatment? In this video, we explain how dentists should think about this in practice.
If you’re wearing a sports mouthguard for rugby or hockey or anything like that, and you’re worried about this may be affecting your clear aligner treatment, there can be ways we can work around that. So sports mouthguards can be adapted to be a little looser, and they can kinda sit over your aligners and allow them to keep working.
It can be a little tricky for longer cases where there’s more severe movement, where the mouthguard may need to be adapted or things like that. But there’s often a way around these kind of things and it’s just about having that conversation with your clinician to make sure that A, you get the alignment that you’re after, but B, most importantly, your teeth are protected throughout that journey, especially if you’re wearing a mouth guard a lot for sports.
