1. Consult your treatment plan
Not all Smilelign cases require Interproximal Reduction (IPR), though it is common in crowding cases. Your treatment plan will detail the measurement of IPR required in each zone. It is essential that you follow this to ensure a smooth treatment.
2. Invest in an IPR kit
The simplest method for creating space accurately is with IPR strips. Available in a range of thicknesses, these can be purchased via our website as part of our IPR Kit. The kit also includes extras such as burs, wheels, and an IPR gauge for measuring space created.
3. Respect the anatomy of teeth
It is essential when undertaking IPR to respect the natural anatomy of the teeth. It is important to keep the IPR fully parallel and down to the gingiva. The IPR should be contoured to the tooth’s morphology.
4. Carry out progressive IPR for larger areas
For cases which require more than 0.3mm in a specific IPR zone, progressive IPR is recommended. A minimum of 0.3mm will need to be created before the patient wears their first aligner. The remainder of the IPR can then be completed once the initial space has closed. This space is usually closed within the first couple of aligners. Regularly check with an IPR gauge when conducting IPR to ensure accuracy and adhere to the recommended amount.
5. Monitor contacts throughout treatment
For cases presenting crowding, we recommend monitoring the contacts of the teeth being moved throughout treatment. At each aligner change, monitor the contacts. If these appear to be binding or restricting the movement, we recommend running a thin IPR strip through the teeth.
