This is a common question we’re asked by dentists: Can I use aligners while I am pregnant or breastfeeding? In this video, we explain how dentists should think about this in practice.
Yes, there’s no technical scientific reason why you can’t do that. There are some practical considerations like you’re probably likely to be quite busy when you’re pregnant or you’ve just had a baby. And obviously during your pregnancy, if you’re suffering from morning sickness, wearing aligners can be quite uncomfortable and unpleasant. But aside from that, the only thing to be really aware of is there’s a higher tendency for pregnant women to develop gingivitis.
It’s one of the side effects of pregnancy. So that could impact how densely fit you are for the treatment. But on the other hand, you may be absolutely fine. You might not struggle with any morning sickness or any issues with that, so you are free to have the treatment.
I think it’s just a case of having an open and honest conversation with your dentist before you go ahead with anything.
