This is a common question we’re asked by dentists: Can I continue using my mouthguard or SCI device during treatment? In this video, we explain how dentists should think about this in practice.
So if you already have an SCI device or a mouth guard that you’re used to wearing at night and you’re wondering whether you can keep using that throughout your aligner journey, then the short answer to that is no. Your teeth are going to be moving. They’re going to need to be in aligners. The device you’re used to wearing, especially if you’re treating both arches, will not be able to be worn and then obviously longer term your teeth will have moved positions so it won’t fit anyway. There can be things that we do during treatment and of course after treatment where we can get you back in to the guard that you’re used to. So yes, it’s a case of just adapting that approach to managing your guard situation through the treatment and then a longer term solution once we’ve finished.
